Dr. Michael Apelian, L.Ac., O.M.D.

Welcome to the Acupuncture Therapy Center in Santa Monica!

Santa Monica is the primary area where I have my practice.  For those in the Greater Los Angeles area, I have a second office located in Beverly Hills.

My name is Dr. Michael Apelian, L.Ac., O.M.D. I have been practicing Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills for 35 years. L.Ac. represents Licensed Acupuncturist, a primary care physician in the state of California.  Acupuncturists can order laboratory tests and diagnosis illness using the techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  I graduated from California Acupuncture College and received a certificate from the state in 1984. O.M.D. (Doctorate of Oriental Medicine) is a graduate degree, similar to a PhD, given for additional study after being licensed.  In addition to a doctorate degree at California Acupuncture College in 1985, I undertook a second graduate studies program in China in 1989.

I continue to share my training with students at the local acupuncture school, Emperor’s College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as a Clinical Instructor.  I present Continuing Education  seminars (CEU) for fellow licensed acupuncturists counseling patients on weight maintenance and weight loss.

I love my work because I enjoy helping people feel better.

An acupuncturist utilizes more than acupuncture to help people feel better. The medical services I offer include:

Acupuncture

Chinese Medicinal Herbs

Nutritional Medicine

Nutritional Supplements

Laboratory Tests

Acupressure and Physical Medicine

Exercise Instruction

House Calls

Consultation by Skype or Telephone

Meditation

Pain: the most common symptom that patients seek the care of an acupuncturist for. Pain can occur anywhere, everywhere: sometimes anywhere and everywhere in the body.

Fatigue: another common symptom patients see an acupuncturist for. Acupuncture in combination with Chinese Medicinal herbs or Nutritional Supplements can relieve this symptom.

Acupuncture for weight loss: Many patients are looking for the effect acupuncture has in curbing the appetite, and how acupuncture stimulates a sluggish metabolism.  My acupuncture treatment for weight loss includes a dietary plan people can stay with.

Acupuncture for relief of stress: In a persons life today there are numerous causes of stress and frustration.  Acupuncture treatment can calm and re-balance the nervous system.  Acupuncture treatment can help patients struggling with sleep issues.

Acupuncture for constipation: Acupuncture helps with maintaining regularity of intestinal function. This is the reason acupuncture also helps to relieve the pain and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Disease (IBS).

Acupuncture following a stroke: XNKQ (Xing Nao Kai Qiang) therapy following a stroke is effective for post-stroke rehabilitation.  XNKQ protocol has a high rate of success.  Dr. Shi Xue Min developed XNKQ therapy in 1972.  Two million patients have been treated worldwide.  XNKQ is also appropriate for symptoms associated with impaired cognition or dementia.  XNKQ is effective in the treatment of the symptoms of senile dementia.   A patient’s treatment with XNKQ therapy following a stroke has been chronicled in the movie “9000 needles”.

Acupuncture to enhance fertility in couples: Acupuncture is combined with other techniques. Appropriate laboratory tests are reviewed, or can be ordered. I combine the Traditional techniques of Chinese Medicine with modern western science to enhance the natural fertility in the man and the woman in a couple.

Acupuncture Face lift (Facial Rejuvenation): I have used and taught this technique in class for 30 years. A handbook I wrote is included in a ten treatment series of treatmets. The Handbook of Facial Rejuvenation describes the points that are stimulated oneself to continue the rejuvenation process by the acupuncture treatment at home. The technique takes about ten minutes and is suitable for daily use.

Acupuncture for athletes: Athletes use acupuncture to recover from sports injuries and to increase their athletic performance, giving themselves a competitive edge.  My treatment protocol combines acupuncture with Chinese Medicinal herbs that have been shown to increase athletic performance and endurance.

Acupuncture in preparation for surgery: Acupuncture treatment is used prior to a surgical procedure to expedite and facilitate the recovery process. Acupuncture following surgery will increase the speed of the healing process by 10 to 30 %.

Acupuncture for immune system deficiency: Some people are always catching a cold. They get over one cold and catch another. Acupuncture can break this cycle. Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes the Immune System, named “Wei Chi”, and has treatment protocols for strengthening it.

Common Symptoms: Click here for a list of symptoms I often treat with Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
